Blepharoplasty: Open Up Those Eyes at Chicago Iteld Plastic Surgery

By: Dr. Lawrence Iteld

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is designed to improve the appearance and sometimes the function of the eyelids. Whether you’re considering it for aesthetic reasons or due to issues like impaired vision, understanding the process and benefits is important for my patients before they decide to undergo this or any plastic surgery.

Eyelid surgery is often transformative for my patients, offering both aesthetic improvement and functional relief for those dealing with drooping or puffy eyelids. Let’s take a closer look at eyelid surgery.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

As we age, the skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, causing drooping, puffiness, or bags under the eyes. In some cases, sagging upper eyelids can even interfere with your vision. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure where I remove excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids.

Types of Blepharoplasty:

  • Upper eyelid surgery: Removes excess skin and fat that may cause a “hooded” appearance or block peripheral vision.
  • Lower eyelid surgery: Targets under-eye bags and can tighten, as well as reposition sagging skin.

Why Our Patients Get Blepharoplasty?

The motivation behind blepharoplasty can be cosmetic, functional, or both. Common reasons our patients want eyelid surgery include:

  • A more youthful and rested appearance
  • Reduction of under-eye puffiness or bags
  • Correction of drooping eyelids that impair vision
  • Boost in self-confidence and facial symmetry

The Procedure

Depending on the complexity, I perform eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia at our outpatient surgical center. For some patients, I am able to offer upper Blepharoplasty as an in-office procedure, so patients have even less downtime.

For these procedures, I make incisions along the patient’s natural eyelid folds, minimizing visible scarring. Some patients only need upper eyelid surgery to open their eyes, remove hooding, and give them a younger look. For patients who have bags or sagging skin below their eyes, I perform a lower blepharoplasty to tighten and reposition the skin, as needed. Some patients frequently have both their upper and lower lids done at the same time.

Recovery and Results

Recovery time varies, but most patients experience some bruising and swelling for 1–2 weeks. Cold compresses and following the post-op care instructions provided by our team can speed up healing. Following my Smart Recovery procedure, you’ll find you don’t need to worry about pain you won’t have. You’ll be comfortable during and after your procedure. As a result, you’ll feel better faster and may only need Tylenol®.

And your results? Patients generally see a more alert, refreshed appearance once the swelling subsides. The results are long-lasting, with many people enjoying the benefits for 5–10 years or more.

Is Blepharoplasty Right for You?
