Choose the right plastic surgeon for you

How are you going to choose the right plastic surgeon for you? If you’re like most patients, you’ll probably start your search by asking a few friends or family members, by going on social media, or by looking up “Chicago plastic surgeon” on Google or Bing. Okay, that’s a starting point, but only that. After all, you’ll want a surgeon whose skills, techniques and approach match your goals.

Do your due diligence

You found a few doctors who seem interesting. Now do your homework. We believe informed patients make better decisions and are more satisfied with their results. With that in mind, here are four important steps we recommend you follow in making an educated decision:

1. Credentials

Not all doctors are created equally, so be sure to check out the doctors’ credentials. You’ll want a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Tooting my own horn here, I am certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgery. And, I am extremely pleased that I am a Castle Connolly Top Doctor—selected by my peers as one of the most outstanding healthcare providers. It’s important to know that I do not and cannot pay to be selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor.

2. Reviews

Time to check out reviews.

Lots of professional and social websites rate doctors and post reviews. Most people go to Yelp and Google; we suggest you also check medically-oriented sites, such as realself.com.

Check out the testimonials on the doctors’ websites. We know that no one would post a bad comment on their site, but even the good ones will give you a clearer insight into doctors’ approach to their patients and the surgeries they perform.

Ask your doctors and friends. Their input is one component in your final decision.

3. Results

Before and after photos are a great way to see the type of results doctors achieve. Make sure you are happy with the look of the surgeons’ work. For example, if you’re interested in breast augmentation with natural-looking results, and the doctor’s website has hundreds of photos but shows women with breasts that look like melons, then it’s not the right fit for you. And, the reverse is also true.

4. Consults

You’ve done your research, narrowed the list, and it’s time to schedule at least two face-to-face consultations even if you think you found THE right surgeon. You’ll want to compare their suggested surgical approaches, pre- and post-op plans, and more.

Ask lots of questions. And, if it helps you define your goals, bring photos of your desired outcome. You want to feel comfortable with the surgeon you choose and the specific recommendations they suggest for you.

Again, tooting my own horn, one of the things that sets me apart from my colleagues is my approach to non-opioid surgery and recovery. We discuss this at all consultations because your physical comfort and peace of mind are that important.
