Comparing Cup Size to Implants for Breast Augmentation
4/23/2025
When considering breast augmentation, one of the most common questions women ask me is how implant sizes correlate to bra cup sizes. Cup size can be a helpful reference point, but it doesn’t directly correlate to the size of breast implants. There are a variety of factors that affect both, making it crucial to consider more than just a number when making your decision.
Let’s break down the key differences between cup size and implant volume to help you navigate this decision-making process.
How we measure breast implants
Breast implants are measured by volume in cubic centimeters (cc). Implants typically range from 120cc to 800cc (or more), and the volume of the implant is what determines how much larger your breasts will appear after augmentation.
Working with our patients, we choose implant volume based on their individual body frame, current breast size, and desired outcome. It’s a more precise way to determine size because it focuses on implant volume rather than just the shape of the breast. Keep in mind that implants come in different shapes as well — round or teardrop-shaped —and that can influence the overall appearance of the breast regardless of volume.
How implant size relates to cup size
Here’s where things can get a bit tricky. Because cup size is a relative measurement based on the band size, there’s no direct or universally accepted correlation between implant volume and bra cup size. However, as a general rule of thumb, this can provide you with some insight:
- 120cc - 200cc: Often increases one cup size.
- 200cc - 300cc: Can increase one to two cup sizes.
- 300cc - 400cc: Commonly increases two cup sizes.
- 400cc - 500cc: Generally increases two to three cup sizes.
- 500cc - 800cc: Can increase three or more cup sizes, depending on body type.
Again, this varies from person to person, as factors such as chest width, natural breast tissue, and skin elasticity play significant roles in how an implant will look once I put it in place.
Why cup size isn’t the best measurement for implants
While it’s natural to think about cup size when you’re considering having breast augmentation with implants, it can be misleading.
- Band size plays a big role in cup size. Even if two people have the same cup size, their implants could be vastly different in volume because their ribcage and overall body structure are different. So, for example, a 34C isn’t the same as a 28C.
- Implants don’t mimic natural breast tissue. Implants are firmer than natural breast tissue, so the look and feel of your breasts after surgery may be different from them pre-surgery.
- Each person’s anatomy is unique. One person may look fuller with 300cc implants, while another may need 400cc implants to achieve a similar result.
- Another consideration: These days, there are many new bras and bralettes that don’t rely on traditional sizes, but rather are sized S M L and XL, etc. Manufacturers provide approximate charts, but you might want to “play” with these to see which fits you best. Many of our patients have discovered these fit great, and are far more comfortable and attractive for their new profile.
