Breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Augmentation is a significant decision women make about how they want to look. Here, we’ll delve into the various aspects of breast augmentation, including the types of implants, the surgical procedure, recovery process, risks, and benefits.

Types of Breast Implants

There are primarily two types of breast implants:

  • Gummy Bear Silicone implants are teardrop-shaped and filled with a thick gel. They have a soft, natural feel. These may be a great choice for you if you want less fullness at the top and a natural droop at the bottom of your breasts.
  • Saline implants are inserted empty and then filled with saline solution. Because of this, the incision site is usually smaller and less noticeable. Sometimes, implant folds may cause “rippling” under the skin and, therefore, not a good choice if you have thin chest skin.

The Surgical Procedure

I perform breast augmentation surgery under general anesthesia, and it can take anywhere from one to several hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. I make incisions either around the areola, under the breast crease, or in the armpit, to minimize visible scarring. The implants are then inserted either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle, a technique known as submuscular. Following my Smart Recovery protocol during surgery, I use a unique long-lasting anesthetic that provides relief for 48- 72 hours following the procedure. This gets patients over the first few days – when they need it most.

Recovery Process

After breast augmentation surgery, you can expect some discomfort but minimal to no pain, swelling, and bruising, which usually subsides within a few weeks. It’s important to follow all our post-operative instructions. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within a week or two, although you should avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

For many women, breast augmentation can provide a boost in self-confidence and body image, enhancing their overall quality of life. Whether it’s achieving a more proportionate figure, restoring breast volume loss due to pregnancy or weight loss, or simply feeling more comfortable in their own skin, the benefits of breast augmentation can be both physical and emotional.

Risks and Complications

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries some risks and potential complications, including infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, implant rupture or leakage, and capsular contracture (the formation of scar tissue around the implant). It’s essential to discuss these risks with us and ensure that you fully understand the potential implications before proceeding with surgery.
