Eyelid Surgery at Iteld Plastic Surgery: Small Procedure. Big impact!

By: Dr. Lawrence Iteld

8/23/2024

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, enhances the appearance of the eyelids. This surgery can address issues with both the upper and lower eyelids, making the eyes look more youthful and alert. Whether for aesthetic purposes or to improve your vision if it’s obstructed by drooping skin, blepharoplasty has become a go-to solution for many of our patients.

It’s more than just a cosmetic enhancement—it’s a step toward feeling more confident and seeing the world more clearly. Read on to learn more.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids. There are two main types of blepharoplasty:

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery: Here, I focus on removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper eyelids. Often performed for cosmetic reasons, this can also be necessary for functional reasons if droopy eyelids interfere with vision.
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery: My goal is to correct issues such as puffiness, bags under the eyes, and wrinkles. It involves removing or repositioning fat, and tightening skin and muscle to create a smoother, firmer appearance.

The Procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia, with sedation, or general anesthesia. I make precise incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids. Through these incisions, I remove or reposition excess skin, muscle, and fat. After making the necessary adjustments, I close the incisions with fine sutures.

Though not always the case, and depending on the patient’s specific need, patients frequently have both their upper and lower lids done at the same time.

Recovery and Results

Recovery from eyelid surgery varies from person to person, but generally, patients can expect some swelling and bruising for the first few days post-surgery. Most people can return to normal activities within a week to ten days. It’s important to follow all our postoperative care instructions to ensure proper healing.

For many, the outcome is a more youthful and refreshed appearance, with some even experiencing an improved field of vision. The results of a blepharoplasty can be long-lasting, although they may be affected by many factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and the natural aging process.

Make a big impact on how you look

This tends to be a quick surgical procedure that can have a big impact on how you look. It is a great stand-alone procedure, and I often recommend that patients having other facial procedures, such as a face/neck lift or a brow lift, consider adding an eye lift to complete their transformation.
