Oh no, it’s hyperpigmentation

By: Our Team

You’ve noticed a dark spot. Are you getting old? Maybe, but hyperpigmentation is the medical term that describes dark skin patches caused by excess melanin production.

Causes of hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that has many different causes. Most commonly, excess sun exposure and aging cause skin discolorations. Other conditions that cause it include hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, chemical or physical injury, allergies, contact with cosmetics and other topical products, plus a host of other conditions. We provide options for cosmetic-related hyperpigmentation. If you have an allergy or medical condition affecting your skin, please see your primary care physician or dermatologist first.

Hyperpigmentation treatment options

We are pleased to offer various nonsurgical options to help you have smoother, more even-toned skin.

Medical-grade chemical peels

Chemical peels use acids at various concentrations to treat the desired areas. They reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by removing the epidermis. We use VI Peels, which are medical-grade “medium-depth” chemical peels. These peels remove skin cells from both the upper part of your skin’s middle layer, as well as the epidermis.

You might need to repeat the procedure to achieve or maintain your desired results of minimizing age spots, sun damage, and blotchy skin.

Keep in mind that chemical peels can’t remove deep scars or wrinkles, nor do they tighten sagging skin. Luckily, we do have other services that do!

Intense pulse light therapy (IPL)

IPL therapy is a mild, gentle non-ablative (fractional) laser treatment that stimulates collagen growth within the dermis. It saturates the surface of your skin with light, thereby targeting problem areas and reversing both signs of damage and aging. IPL does not affect the surrounding skin tissue.

We use Candela Nordlys’ Ellipse IPL. This gentle treatment stimulates new skin cells and collagen production, which results in having your skin look and feel better.

Laser treatments

Need something stronger? That’s why we have the Frax 1550 laser. This non-ablative laser helps slow down and even reverse the visible signs of skin aging, removes age spots, and leaves your skin looking fresher and less wrinkled.

Magic? Not quite, but close. This treatment works by creating microscopic “injuries” that penetrate deep into your skin and tell it to create more collagen. This process encourages the new skin cells to replace the old ones, thereby improving skin texture, tone, and pigmentation.
