Scars? Yuck! Some are just unattractive; others may actually interfere with your ability to move comfortably. Whichever is the case, you don’t have to put up with a scar that bothers you. We have several scar revision procedures that help to minimize a scar so that it becomes less conspicuous, more comfortable, and blends in with the surrounding skin tone and texture.

Scar Revision Options

Depending on the size, type, and scar location, I use several effective ways to minimize or even eliminate them.

  • Injectable fillers can help fill in depressed or concave scars so they blend with the surrounding tissue. Depending on the dermal filler used and your particular scar, results may last from three months to several years. As with all dermal fillers, this treatment will need repeating to maintain the desired results.
  • Excising treatment is an effective way to deal with severe scars that lie deep in the dermis. For these types of scars, I make an incision and completely remove the scar, creating a new flatter and narrowed one. Depending on the extent of the procedure you need, scar revision can be done under local anesthesia, with sedation, or with general anesthesia.
  • For extremely large scars, such as burns, I use a combination of surgical techniques to remove extra scar tissue create less noticeable scars, and release tightness and constriction in the area.

Please keep in mind that the results you achieve will depend on the severity of your scar, and its type, size and location.

Recovery and Results

How long it takes you to recover is directly tied to the size and severity of the scar, how quickly you heal, and which techniques are used. For example, you should have almost no downtime and see almost immediate results with dermal fillers, but recovery will take longer if you need a surgical procedure.

In general, you may experience some tightness, tenderness, swelling, and redness around the treatment area. Over-the-counter pain medication will help ease any discomfort, and symptoms usually subside within a week or two. Please give your scar time to heal by refraining from strenuous physical activities until cleared by us. We may also recommend a topical ointment that softens scars and helps with the healing process.

Over the next few weeks, your new scar will start to show noticeable improvement. And, with the passing of more time, your scar with fade and look even better…as long as you protect the treated areas from sun exposure and you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
