Smart Recovery at Chicago Iteld Plastic Surgery: What it is and why it matters

What is our Smart Recovery

For most of my patients, I manage potential pain without unwanted medications, and without bulky pain pumps. How? You may wonder. This approach isn’t a specific drug; rather, it’s doing things differently. 

• Before surgery, I give patients specifically selected medications. These include special anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the sensation of throbbing and aching, medication to reduce nerve sensitivity, and a pill to reduce the risk of nausea.
• During surgery, I frequently use a unique long-lasting anesthetic that provides relief for 48- 72 hours after surgery. This gets patients over the first few days – when they need it most. The concept is that when patients’ pain is adequately controlled, they can more quickly and easily get around, and require less help from friends and family—in short, a better experience. When you wake from surgery, your pain is already managed. 
• After surgery, some discomfort is normal and is usually handled with only Tylenol® during this recovery period. On the rare occasion over-the-counter solutions aren’t enough to manage a patient’s pain, I prescribe an appropriate pain reliever for a couple of days. We encourage light activities to help patients get back to their normal life.
